Communication Requirement

In the junior and senior year, generally, students will complete
the CI subjects within their major department. These classes are
called CI-M (Communication Intensive in the Major). CI-Ms are integral
to each major program and teach the specific forms of written, oral,
and/or visual communication appropriate to the field's professional
and academic culture. Students may write in teams; prepare and present
oral and visual research reports for different audiences; learn
audience analysis and peer review; or go through the experience
of proposing, writing, and extensively revising a professional journal
article. Students must pass the CI-M subject in order to receive
credit, however, they may receive credit for more than one CI-M
per term or for both a CI-H and a CI-M taken in the same term.
The Department of Physics has designated the following subjects
as CI-M:
VIII and VIII-A options:
8.06 Quantum Physics III
8.13 Experimental Physics I
VIII-Flexible Option (formally VIII-B):
The Physics Department recommends that VIII-Flexible options students satisfy the
departmental portion of the Communications Requirement by taking
8.13 and either 8.225J or 8.287J. The department may accept substitutions
for these subjects by CI-M subjects from other departments if they
form a natural part of the student's individual program.
