Graduate School & Mentoring Dinner

Women In Physics hosted a joint dinner with Undergradute Women In Physics to answer questions about graduate school and kickoff the mentoring program.

Alumnus Michelle Povinelli visited us and gave a talk on advice for grad school and how to conduct a faculty search. Then we went for dinner at the Blue Room in Cambridge.

Green Center opening, Dr. Margaret Wong visits

The Physics department held an open house/symposium to celebrate the opening of the new Green Center for Theoretical Physics. On the same day, we had an opportunity to meet Dr. Wong in the newly finished Margaret Wong Room for Women In Physics.

Path to Professorship: Negotiation Workshop

Women in physics co-sponsored a followup negotiation workshop to the highly successful Path to Professorship workshop for women held last October (organized by the Graduate Student's office). A full day event that took place over IAP, the workshop aimed to help women identify and acquire the negotiation skills necessary for a successful career - be that a job offer, lab space, etc.


L'Oreal Dinner with Prof. Mildred Dresselhaus

Venue: Graduate Student Lounge, MIT
L'Oreal Women in Science program is making a short documentary about the life and career of Mildred Dresselhaus. As part of that, they wanted a short take of her speaking with current MIT female graduate students in Physics. Hor d'oeveurs were served during the filming, followed by dinner.

Ski Trip

Bonding time! Prof Tom Greytak kindly allowed us the use of his cabin up in New Hampshire and about ten of us took time off from our schedules and had a weekend of winter fun - sledding, skiing, and snow shoeing.

Hosting Colloquim Speaker Prof Deborah Jin

We kicked off our colloquim speaker hosting program by hosting Prof. Deborah Jin from University of Colorado. In addition to introducing her at the weekly physics colloquim, we also went to dinner with the speaker at Legal Sea Foods.

Professor Hammonds from the Science, Technology and Society program gave a talk titled "From Physics to the History of Science: A surprising journey."
