The Center for Learning and Memory was founded in 1994 with a grant from the Sherman Fairchild Foundation and has, for the last six years, received major support from the Riken Brain Science Institute in Saitama, Japan.
In 2002, thanks to a very generous gift from the Picower
Foundation, the Center was renamed as "The Picower Center
for Learning and Memory" and was expanded to thirteen
research groups with a total staff of nearly 200. The Picower
gift has also made it possible to erect a new building, with
state-of-the art facilities, scheduled to open later this
year. This building will provide space for expansion as well
as for our current programs.
The National Institutes of Health provide widespread support
for individual research projects, postdoctoral fellowship
and student support as well as for a program project supporting
six of the Institute's faculty. Three of our faculty are supported
by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and many of
our faculty have received awards from private foundations.
