Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) Laboratory has been in existence since the 1970s.
Prof. Fred Frey had a major equipment grant from the National Science Foundation to computerize the gamma spectroscopy system of the NAA laboratory in 1980.
As a result, Canberra Series 80 system with PDP11 Computer was set up for routine geological analysis by Dr. P. Ila .
The INAA Laboratory has been maintained as a state of the art system by Prof. Fred Frey and Dr. P. Ila, with upgrades in 1985 to Canberra's Series 85 system, in 1990 to Canberra's Series 90 system coupled with the DEC Micro Vax 3600 computer and in 2000 to Genie 2000 ESP system coupled with the COMPAQ Alpha Work Station. The laboratory has been equipped with new detectors as well for the gamma spectroscopy system.

The Laboratory is a center for trace element analyses for geochemists not only from the New England area but also from other parts of USA and other countries as well.
