1.6 Institute Councils

Communication and exchange between and within the Faculty and the administration are facilitated through the Academic, Faculty, and Administrative Councils. Senior officers concerned with the overall administration of the Institute meet weekly in the Academic Council to confer on matters of Institute policy. Department heads and directors of centers and laboratories join them to form the Faculty Council, which normally meets once each term. The Administrative Council, comprised of the heads of the major administrative sections of the Institute, meets twice per semester. Memberships of these councils are listed below.

The Creative Arts Council, chaired by the Associate Provost for the Arts, consists of deans, department heads, directors in the arts, and campus-wide faculty representatives, and meets to confer on issues concerning arts programs and policy.

Four councils appointed by the Provost (listed in 1.6.4 below) focus on areas of growing importance to the Institute in both instruction and research. Each is chaired by a member of the Academic Council and has one or more faculty cochairs. In addition, each School has a council of department heads and center and laboratory directors, chaired by the School dean.
