11.3 Privacy of Student Records

In 1999, MIT approved a revision to the policy on the privacy of student records. The Institute's policies on privacy and student information were fundamentally unaltered. The existing policy was clarified to recognize how technology has transformed the means by which we collect, manage, and provide access to student information. Electronic systems in a networked environment facilitate academic and administrative activities for students, faculty, and staff. At the same time, increased access to information poses serious questions about how to protect the privacy of our students while enabling access for legitimate purposes. The revised policy addresses the precautions that must be taken when using electronic communications and clarifies who may have access to student information and under what circumstances.
