Please be sure to have the pagination and format of the title and abstract pages of your thesis checked before printing on archival bond and obtaining signatures. Make an appointment to see Diana Gallagher (dsgall@mit.edu; tel: 617-253-6676) or arrange to email/fax her the relevant pages for review.
Three copies of each student’s thesis are required by the department. Students completing joint degrees are required to submit four copies. All copies should be submitted unbound.
Two copies must be on archival bond with original signatures. (Students completing joint degrees must submit three copies on archival bond with original signatures.) The remaining one copy may be on photocopy paper. This copy goes to the thesis supervisor.
Thesis labels should contain your name, the title, course 17, PhD or SM, the month (September, February, or June only) and year of the degree, and the copy number (1, 2, 3). Labels should be affixed to each cover of the thesis (copying your title page and cutting it below the copyright will give you the label needed). Cardboard covers for the front and back of each copy of the thesis can be obtained at the Institute Archives (14N-118).
Thesis title pages should indicate the name and official titles of the thesis supervisor and the chair of the Graduate Program Committee (GPC) accepting the thesis on behalf of the Department. Professor Roger Petersen is the current chair of the GPC. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the signatures of the thesis supervisor and the chair of the GPC unless they have made other arrangements with Diana Gallagher.
Students should bring all three copies of the thesis to Diana Gallagher in E53-465A. PhD candidates must complete the UMI form (see MIT's Thesis Specifications) with photocopies of both title and abstract pages attached. All students are also required to complete a departmental survey at the time they submit their thesis.
In addition to submitting paper copies of their theses students may now also submit an electronic thesis to MIT’s digital library. This allows those interested in viewing the thesis to do so without charge. (The cost of ordering a paper copy of a thesis from MIT can approach $100 for a 400 page thesis.) You can find instructions here.
