Increasingly, attempts to protect endangered species conflict with human land use.  Are the social, political, and economic "costs" of locking up land in its natural state worth the benefits of biodiversity?  What price have we paid for protecting endangered species?  Is the continuing political backlash against the Endangered Species Act (and similar state-level statutes) justified?
