The HASS Minor in Public Policy is a six course sequence:

  • Tier 1: two courses
  • Tier 2: one course
  • Tier 3: three courses in a policy track

Structure of Subjects

I. Introduction to Markets, Politics, and Public Policy (two required subjects)

  • 11.002J/17.30J Making Public Policy
    • HASS-D, CI-H

    • a basic introduction to the concepts and theories of public policy

  • 14.01 Principles of Microeconomics (HASS)

II. Methods of Policy Analysis

  • 11.003J/17.303j  Methods of Policy Analysis
    • HASS
    • overview of methods used to evaluate different approaches to public policy

III. Policy Track

  • Three subjects chosen in one of the following policy tracks:
    (The individual track sites are still under construction, please consult with one of the Public Policy Minor advisors about your planned policy track)
    • Social and Educational Policy
    • Environmental Policy
    • Infrastructure Policy
    • Science and Technology Policy
    • Labor and Industrial Policy
    • International Development Policy
    • Security and Defense Policy
    • Urban and Regional Policy
  • Students may propose their own tracks for approval by their minor advisor.
  • Students may substitute one subject for a semester long internship in their chosen field for one subject, upon the approval of their minor advisor.  The internship must be at least 9 units and must be for a letter grade.  For information on the Department of Political Science internship program click here.
General Guidelines for a HASS Minor:
  • Of the six subjects required for the HASS Minor, at most five shall count toward satisfaction of the Institute HASS Requirement. Of these five, at most one shall count toward Distribution; and

  • The junior/senior pass/fail option may not be used in a HASS Minor program.
