Simultaneous Award of SB and SM Degrees in Political Science (Five-Year Program)

MIT Political Science offers a five-year program leading to simultaneous Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Political Science. Institute undergraduates enrolled as candidates for the Course 17 SB degree may apply to the department to become candidates for the joint SB/SM degree.

The five-year program is the equivalent of a four-year undergraduate degree program plus one year of graduate-level work to satisfy the Master of Science requirements.

The Department recommends that interested students apply during their junior year. Students wishing to pursue this program must apply for graduate admission; the deadline for the 2013-14 academic year is December 15, 2012. Further information and materials are available through MIT Graduate Admissions.

Students must register for at least one regular academic term (not the summer session) to be recommended for the simultaneous award of the bachelor's and master's degrees. Theses submitted for the SM degree will be accepted by the department as fulfillment of the undergraduate thesis requirement.

Program applicants must have completed at least 240 units as undergraduates upon application. A minimum of six graduate subjects is required for the SM degree, at least four of which must be in political science at MIT. At the graduate level, students must complete at least 66 units of graduate work, of which 42 units must be H-level subjects.
