Research Description
To date, various chemicals including fuels, fine chemicals, plastics, and pharmaceuticals have been produced from fossil resources such as petroleum. However, the limited reserves and increased demand of petroleum have brought about rising global oil prices. Furthermore, the heavy use of fossil resources by traditional chemical industries has exacerbated the growing problem of global warming. As a fundamental solution to these problems, environmentally-friendly alternative chemicals from biological resources are required. My research focuses on the production of these alternative chemicals using microorganisms. To this end, I will investigate diverse genetic sources and optimize retrobiosynthetic pathways using manifold molecular biological techniques.
