On February 16, 2012, Susan Hockfield, the 16th president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, announced her intention to step down from her position, which she has held since December 2004.

On May 16, 2012, L. Rafael Reif was elected by the MIT Corporation to be the 17th president of MIT. Dr. Reif will start his duties as president on July 2, 2012.
