MIT Corporation Chairman Dana G. Mead announced in January 2004 the formation of the two panels charged with leading the Institute’s search for a successor to President Charles M. Vest.

The two groups, the Corporation Committee on the Presidency (CCOP) and the Faculty Advisory Committee to the Corporation on the presidential search (FAC), held their first joint meeting on Thursday, January 8, 2004 thus officially launching the search for MIT’s 16th president.

Dr. Mead appointed James A. Champy, Chairman of Consulting of Perot Systems Corporation, to chair the Corporation committee.  The faculty officers appointed Jerome I. Friedman, Institute Professor and professor of Physics, to chair the faculty committee.  Professor Rafael Bras, Chair of the MIT Faculty, had asked the faculty for suggestions for FAC membership, and received some 200 responses.  The faculty officers used that information to assemble the full membership of the committee.
