Cardinal Warde is a professor of electrical engineering at MIT, where his research focuses on the development of optoelectronic neural co-processors for brain-like computing, multispectral-polarimetric imaging sensors, infrared projection displays, and holographic displays.
He is an inventor on 12 patents, and has published three book chapters in addition to more than 150 technical papers on optical materials, devices and systems. Since 1997, Warde has served as the faculty director of the MITES program at MIT (a six-week intensive program in science and engineering for gifted under-represented minority high school seniors). Warde is a fellow of the Optical Society of America, and an associate editor of the Journal of Display Technology.
He is the recipient of honorary doctorate degrees in science from the University of the West Indies and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Warde founded Optron Systems in 1982, and in 1999 cofounded Radiant Images, which was subsequently acquired by Hoya of Japan. He has served on the U.S. National Science Foundation Small Business Advisory Committee, on the Board of Trustees of Stevens Institute of Technology and on the boards of several small high-technology companies. Warde is the current president of the Caribbean Diaspora for Science, Technology and Innovation, which is launching the Caribbean Science Foundation to help stimulate technology-based economic development in the Caribbean. He also serves as a scientific advisor to the Governments of Barbados and Belize. He graduated from the Stevens Institute of Technology (with high honor) in 1969, and received the MPhil and PhD degrees in physics in 1971 and 1974, respectively, from Yale University.
