Welcome - Robert P. Redwine, Dean for Undergraduate Education

The Cambridge - MIT Institute (CMI)
• Live videoconference with MIT students currently in Cambridge and Cambridge University students here at MIT to discuss the educational styles and campus life of the two institutions.

Service Learning
• Presentations by students from two design seminars: the first made toys for children at the Codman Square Health Center while learning design tools, and the second developed a process to make cooking fuel from sawdust, a waste product of the timber industry in Ghana.

MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI)
• Presentations featured the problem solving training used to prepare students to work in other countries, and a report about an internship at DaimlerChrysler in Germany.

“Knowledge and Action,” held Friday, March 1, in Room 6-120, was the afternoon segment of the 2002 MacVicar Day celebration and followed the announcement of this year’s MacVicar Faculty Fellows. Three groups of students, representing the Cambridge-MIT Institute (CMI); Service Learning, and the MIT International Science and Technology Initiative (MISTI), presented their experiences in innovative educational programs that provide the opportunity to study and work abroad, or to develop products for use by local or international communities. Five professors were named MacVicar Faculty Fellows in recognition of their innovative teaching practices and accomplishments.


Alan H. Guth - Physics
Steven R. Hall - Aeronautics and Astronautics
Kip V. Hodges - Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences
Nancy G. Kanwisher - Brain and Cognitive Sciences and the McGovern Institute for Brain Research
David Thorburn -Literature

The formal presentations were made by Provost Robert A. Brown at the MIT Corporation luncheon on 1 March 2002. The Fellows were chosen by a special committee headed by Dean of Undergraduate Education Robert P. Redwine. Tech Talk article
