In an effort to provide cost-effective
imagery of the campus for use in MIT print and web publications, PSB commissioned
the creation of a photo library that is available to the community online.
For a nominal fee, members of the MIT community are welcome to reproduce
these photographs in Institute publications and websites. Because stock photography
can run from $400-$2,000 per image, and a photo session from $1,500-$3,500
per day, this low-cost program represents an economical alternative for
MIT departments that require high-quality images of the campus.
Browse the collection online and choose individual photos
for consideration in your print or web project. These photos have been watermarked
to protect their usage. You may copy any watermarked photo directly from
this online collection at no charge. Once you have selected an image for
use in your publication, PSB will send you a file without the watermark.
Simply follow the instructions below. After you complete the PSB photo agreement
form and provide an MIT account number, we will send you the image and charge
the $20-per-photo fee to your department.
The photos in the left column below were taken by Stuart Darsch, the aerial photos in the middle were taken by Steve Dunwell, and those in the right column were taken by Patsy Sampson. When possible, please use a photo credit in your publications.
As an upcoming service, PSB is exploring solutions for the creation of an MIT-wide image library that would allow members of the community to share and access a large collection of high-quality images. For updates on the project's progress, visit http://web.mit.edu/psb/imageteam/.
1) Choose a category from the
list below. A new window will open with a series of thumbnail photos.

2) Select a photo to view it at
a larger size.
3) You may copy a watermarked
photo directly to your desktop for consideration in your project. A watermarked
photo is not suitable for final print or web use, but may be used as a placeholder
(known as a for position only image, or FPO) in any preliminary design options.
4) To request an unwatermarked
photo, copy the image file name, found in the upper left hand corner of
the image window, into the PSB photo agreement form:

5) Repeat for as many images as
you need.
6) Send the completed PSB photo
agreement form to guillers@mit.edu, and your request will be processed.
In some cases, the photos we provide may not be of sufficient
resolution or appropriate image format for your final project. Please contact
your PSB advisor or Steve Guillerm to discuss the image and file requirements of your specific
project.
The News Office and The Tech are other sources of campus
photographs. To seek permission to use a photo taken by a member of their
staffs, contact:
News Office: 617.253.2700, newsoffice@mit.edu
The Tech: 617.253.1541, photo@the-tech.mit.edu
If you'd prefer to hire a freelance photographer, your PSB
advisor can recommend vendors and help you to evaluate portfolios.
Remember, if you intend to reproduce a photograph that includes
people, you will need to obtain permission from the subject or subjects
with a photo release form.
