Background and goals
With this first in a series of annual lectures, the Laboratory
for Energy and the Environment (LFEE) client team decided that
publicity via posters would help attract an audience for a speaker
they felt did not have immediate name recognition. The goal of
the poster design was to create an image with the same impact
as the speaker's book cover design and reflect the topic of the
lecture. The schedule did not permit enough time for obtaining
the original image from the book publisher. The PSB role
The PSB advisor helped connect the client team with a designer
whose previous work reflected the type of nature-related images
that would speak well to the audience for this event. The advisor
also considered the client's overall budget and, with the designer,
recommended digital printing. Because the client was unfamiliar
with printing techniques, the PSB advisor provided examples of
both offset and digital printing to show how digital printing
met the quality requirements and offered an affordable solution
for the low quantity and tight schedule. The PSB advisor also
worked as a liaison with the designer, client team, and printer
throughout the job in the choice of paper and the review of printer's
proofs.
Results
This project had a limited budget but benefited from professional
design and the quick production of 300 digitally printed posters.
The graphically bold poster stood out on bulletin boards around
campus. The auditorium had a standing-room-only crowd that spilled
out into the hallways, and the client felt this was a huge success
for a first-time event.
