MIT client

Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE)

completed

Spring 2005-Fall 2006

audience

Current and prospective undergraduate and graduate students, research community, peer institutions, faculty, staff, alumni, current and prospective donors, corporations, foundations and the government, media, and general public

goals

Start by creating a graphic identity that represents the essence of MechE. Going forward, apply the identity to all MechE publications to present a unified voice and build brand recognition. For the website, attract more MechE majors and create a site that can be easily maintained and edited with a content management system.

strategy

Leverage the cost of a one-time exploration and graphic identity development over many communications pieces. Create a graphic identity that conveys that the department is a world leader in education and research that has a world-class faculty, excellent facilities and resources, and exciting research opportunities. Use a content management system to allow flexible website editing by multiple site administrators. Through custom photography, emphasize that people are the essence of MechE. Design a website with a contemporary, hip look and feel.

benefits

The department is realizing long-term cost savings by devoting time up front to creating a look and feel to which all communications materials comply. The website showcases MechE as a cutting-edge program. Senior faculty members commented that the branding of MechE has been a success. More freshmen are aware of the department through its graphics, and an increasing number are choosing MechE as a major.
