Solution to American Championship

by Naomi Cliffer

The puzzle is a description of the letters pulled out of the bag by each player in a Scrabble game, and their respective scores at each turn. For example, the first player draws GIINNNW, plays WINNING for 80 points, and then draws EGLNRRTT. The first task is to figure out how the game progresses.

Words played, in order:

Player 1Player 2
WINNINGRANTS
ENTRANTSEMITTING
LARGESTROSEMARY
VALUEDGUINEA
WORDUXORIAL
SKYWAY, WINNINGSWHOOP
ABODE, OEZETA
QUIVERHYSSOP
PIPEJIB
ALLPARALLELEPIPED
OFTENICONS
DOTECUD

And the final board looks like this:

  V     DOTE  Q
  A      F    U  P
  LARGE ST  J IB A
  U   N  E    V  R
  EMITT ING   E  A
  D   R   UXO RIAL
      A   I      L
Z   WIN NINGs    E
E   O T   E K  I L
T   ROS EMARY  C E
A BODE      W HOOP
            A  N I
           HY SSOp
                 E
               CUD

Notice the first few words played by player 1: WINNING ENTRANTS LARGEST VALUED WORD. The answer is thus PARALLELEPIPED, for 221 points (the largest valued word by far).
