Using standard Battleships rules except where noted in the puzzle introduction, the ships should be uniquely placeable in the following configuration:

As suggested by the A and Z in the original puzzle, you can fill the squares with four consecutive alphabets from A-Z. The single-square ships of the Castorian fleet are on the squares B,L,I,T,H (reading top to bottom) and those of the Polluxian fleet on E,S,O,M,E, giving the answer BLITHESOME.
