The Fifth Element (and 35 More)

by Mark L. Gottlieb
Answer: ARSENIC, CALCIUM, MYLANTA, AMMONIA

Solvers must deduce the two-letter symbol for each element based on their names and on the way they combine into molecules.

Each molecule is made up of six elements such that their symbols chain together into a 7-letter word. For example, AMENITY is made up of Am, Me, En, Ni, It, and Ty. When the molecules' names are entered into the chart, the answer is spelled out diagonally. The positions of the molecules in the chart change each quarter, leading to a different diagonal each time.
