by Nathaniel Zuk and Matthew S. Cain

Answer: ROTOR SET

Each of the images allude to the direct translations of the latin/greek names of different regions of the brain (for example, the picture of Gish refers to substantia nigra = “black substance”). The arrows from each image point to Brodmann areas. Puzzlers are supposed identify the brain regions referred to by the pictures, and then index into the names of the brain regions using the numbers of the Brodmann areas (labeled BA below).

fusifoRm gyrus — “spindle-shaped” (points to BA 7)
hippOcampus — “seahorse” (points to BA 5)
dentaTe nucleus (or dentate gyrus) — “teeth” (points to BA 6)
corOna radiata — “radiating crown” (points to BA 4)
locus caeRuleus — “blue area” (points to BA 7)

uncuS — “hook” (points to BA 5)
geniculatE — “knee, joint” (points to BA 10)
substanTia nigra — “black substance” (points to BA 8)

Reading the indexed letters from left to right, the answer to the puzzle is ROTOR SET.
