This puzzle consists of twenty-one songs, all of which are roughly in common meter: four lines, with the first and third in iambic tetrameter (eight syllables) and the second and fourth in iambic trimeter (six syllables). Because they all have roughly the same meter, they can all be sung to each other’s melodies. This melodic substitution is somewhat well-known for “Amazing Grace,” “The House of the Rising Sun,” and “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Isle.”

No lyric in this puzzle is sung to its proper melody. Instead, the lyrics and melodies have been crossed over each other, and the resulting lines have been strung together. Each line also corresponds with a given letter. If solvers align these letters so that the corresponding melodies are sung correctly from left to right and each corresponding set of lyrics is sung correctly from top to bottom, the result is the repeating grid shown below.

Many of the songs are missing one line, forming empty intersections of words. Each intersection can be filled by one letter to form two uncapitalized English words. These intersections are shown in yellow and bold in the grid. The inserted letters spell SMASHING PUMPKINS, which is the answer to the puzzle.
