Carrie Buck, the first victim of Virginia's compulsory sterilization law of 1924, and also the victim of a rape, may have been institutionalized in an effort to hide the shame of her pregnancy and the identity of her rapist, rather than as a result of mental illness

ABSTRACT: 'This paper presents two case studies of eugenic legislation. The first is an influential suggestion for a Model Eugenical Sterilization Law.' This model law, written by Harry H. Laughlin, a leading American eugenicist, was included in his 1922 book "Eugenical Sterilization in the United States", published by the Municipal Court of Chicago. The second case is the verdict of the United States Supreme Court in its 1927 ruling in "Buck v. Bell". The issue in this case was the constitutionality of a Virginia statute mandating enforced sterilization ("Buck v. Bell" 1926).' Followed by a commentary, 'Eugenics--Medical or social science?' by Peter Weingart follows (pp. 197-207)
