The Redesign Team began its work on 1/24/95 and reported to the Reengineering Steering Committee on 4/25/95. Based on the redesign the East Zone Team began a pilot in selected buildings in the east campus area on 8/14/95. During the pilot other teams were formed to work on detailed plans for the rollout of other local zones across campus, a central zone to provide backup to the local zones, and an new process for doing work in-house that was previously contracted out. The RM Data Team evaluated information technology solutions to support the redesigned repair and maintenance process and is currently implementing the first release of their recommendation. Meanwhile the Supplier Consolidation Supply/Repair/Maintenance Team is looking into improvements in the purchase and storage of the supplies needed for the physical operation of buildings and facilities across MIT.
The rollout of the redesign in Physical Plant began on 2/1/96. The campus was divided into five maintenance zones. The East Zone Team continues to support the buildings in the pilot area and other teams were formed for the new zones. Zone D began serving the west, northwest, and north sections of campus on 5/13/96. Zones A and B began service on 9/23/96 and were followed by the last zone, Zone C, on 11/25/96. Meanwhile additional teams were formed to provide central services not provided by the local zone teams. The Implementation Team was responsible for the deployment of the new process across the campus.
