Memorandum to:
Information Systems Staff
Information technology staff and supervisors in other Institute offices

From: James D. Bruce
Vice President for Information Systems

Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT

I am pleased to announce appointments to the new I/T Leadership Team:

Diane Devlin as Director, Office Computing
Greg Anderson as Director, I/T Discovery
Roger Roach as Director, I/T Service
Cecilia d'Oliveira as Director, I/T Support
Susan Minai-Azary as Director, I/T Integration
Shirley Picardi as Director, I/T Competency Group
Tim McGovern as Director, I/T Competency Group

These individuals will begin planning for the transition to the new I/T framework with the others of us who are on the new leadership team:

Jim Bruce Vice President for Information Systems
Greg Jackson Director, Academic Computing
Marilyn McMillan Implementation Captain for I/T Transformation

Two openings remain on the team. We will immediately launch a nationwide search for a Director, I/T Delivery. Further, we will defer searching for the third Director, I/T Competency Group until late summer. This will permit the I/T Leadership Team to do more detailed planning about the I/T competency groups before that position is filled.

The I/T Leadership Team appointments are effective on July 1, 1995. However, beginning with an offsite session June 13-15, the new team will start work to prepare plans for the transition to the new I/T framework and to coordinate I/T activities associated with reengineering. We expect to confer broadly about elements of the plan, aiming to publish a timetable in early August.

In addition to planning for the transition, each member of the new I/T Leadership Team has significant responsibilities in their current positions. I commit to work with each member of the team to ensure the continued success of those activities as their responsibilities are transferred to others. During the transition planning effort this summer, _all_ current IS organization structures, reporting responsibilities, and fiscal accountabilities will remain intact. New arrangements will be explicitly announced as they are implemented. It is likely that we will introduce such changes gradually over time during the upcoming six months, rather than all at once.

The current directors have brought Information Systems successfully through countless transitions and a long way toward being ready to create and strengthen partnerships that can do "Great Systems Fast!" I deeply appreciate their efforts! I also appreciate the interest of the many highly qualified candidates who were interested in these new opportunities, as well as the work of all the advisors who assisted in the search process. It has been wonderful to realize that interest in making this transition successful is already quite widely shared. All of us on the new I/T Leadership Team are enthusiastic about joining with each of you to transform the way we work together to introduce, operate, and help everyone use information technology at MIT. We are committed to creating an I/T framework that provides valued results and services, where teams are the center of the action and where we continuously develop I/T skills, improve I/T work processes, and focus on customers.

Thank you for your patience and contributions. I count on your continuing to put our customers first and to support each other as we go forward.
