The Evolving MIT Campus

"The buildings on this extraordinary campus should be as diverse, innovative, and audacious as the community they support. They should stand as a metaphor for the ingenuity at work inside them." —Charles M. Vest, President

MIT has embarked on one of its most ambitious building initiatives. All over campus you can hear the sound of history being built on numerous active construction sites, on streetscape improvements, utility upgrades, and structural restorations. And other projects are on the drawing boards.

The architectural metamorphosis now under way will add nearly one million state-of-the art square feet to MIT's 154-acre campus and will rejuvenate many existing facilities. Flexible, leading-edge laboratories will support emerging research demands. New residence halls and common spaces will inspire visionary collaboration, and the architecture itself will reinforce the vital, forward-thinking spirit of the community it serves.
