Students with graduation caps.

What you need to know

MIT confers degrees three times a year, culminating in Commencement celebrations each spring in Killian Court. Only those students awarded a degree — in May/June or in September or February of that same academic year — are permitted to march in the processions and participate in the exercises.

If you are on the degree list, but not cleared to graduate, you will receive an email notification from your department or the Registrar’s Office. If you decide not to graduate, contact your departmental undergraduate academic administrator or graduate academic administrator to have your name removed from the degree list by the deadline.

View the Commencement site for logistics, including information about the schedule of events, tickets, and regalia.

What you need to do

  • Review your undergraduate and graduate requirements, along with important dates and deadlines, to ensure that you take the necessary steps to graduate.
  • Check WebSIS to make sure that there are no outstanding grades, obligations, or financial charges that would prevent you from receiving your degree.
  • International students — request a letter of invitation for family members who need a visa to visit the United States to attend the graduation ceremonies directly in iMIT.
    • After logging into iMIT, select "F-1 Student Services" or "J-1 Student Services," depending on your visa status.
    • Select "Letter of Family Invitation."
