Loan Deferment Letters

A loan deferment letter certifies your enrollment in the current term, as well as every previous term that you have been registered. It is typically used to provide proof of your enrollment to your student loan servicer when you are requesting deferment of a previous student loan. These certifications apply primarily to current students, but are also sometimes requested by recent graduates, and can be produced for any former student requiring a breakdown of his or her enrollment by term. (For more information on loan deferments, please visit the Student Financial Services website.)

Loan deferment letters can be obtained online through the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC), or from the Student Services Center in 11-120. There are differences in the content produced by either source.

The online NSC deferment letter is found at the "All Enrollment" option on the Student Self-Service site. The letter includes:

Note that the NSC records only go back to 2008. If you have enrollment information from earlier than that time, you may need to request the certification from MIT.

A loan deferment letter generated here at MIT includes:

The letter can be faxed or mailed to you or a third party. It can also be held for you to pick up in person.
