Grading Policy for
Advanced Standing Examinations (ASEs)
The following policies apply to the grading of all ASEs:
- Grades received for ASEs are not included in the calculation of the term or cumulative GPA.
- A passing grade on an Advanced Standing Exam entitles you to full credit for the subject.
- If you fail an Advanced Standing Exam you may not retake the exam, but you may register for the corresponding subject in a subsequent term.
- If you are an undergraduate on academic warning, an Advanced Standing Exam taken in December or May counts toward your warning credit limit for the term. Exams taken in August/September or January/February do not count toward the warning credit limit.
ASE Grading Policies for Freshmen
- If you receive a C or better on an Advanced Standing Exam taken in August/September or December, you will receive the grade P. The P grade will be posted to your fall term record and will appear on your transcript.
- If you receive a C or better on an Advanced Standing Exam taken in January/February or May, you will receive a letter grade (A, B, or C). The letter grade will be posted to your spring term record and will appear on your transcript. It will not be included in the calculation of your term or cumulative GPA.
- No record will be kept of D or F performance if the exam is taken in August/September. Non-passing D or F grades on an exam taken later in the first year will appear on your internal record, but not on your transcript.
- If you pass an Advanced Standing Exam but decide to take the subject in a subsequent term, both the subject and the Advanced Standing Exam, along with their grades, will show on your transcript. The grade received for the subject will be used in the calculation of your term and cumulative GPAs. The grade received for the Advanced Standing Exam will not be used in the calculation.
- If you take the exam in December or May, the credit earned will count toward the freshman credit limit for the term (54 units for fall; 57 units for spring).
ASE Grading Policies for Upperclass and Graduate Students
- A grade ranging from A through F will be recorded and will appear on your transcript. The grade will not be included in the calculation of your term or cumulative GPA.
- If you decide to take the subject in a subsequent term, both the subject and the Advanced Standing Exam, along with their grades, will show on your transcript. The grade received for the subject will be used in the calculation of your term and cumulative GPAs. The grade received for the Advanced Standing Exam will not be used in the calculation.
