Need to find the location of a classroom? Consult the MIT Campus Map
Cross-registration is not available during MIT’s summer session or during Independent Activites Period (IAP).
The cross-registration program is not available to students from the Harvard Extension School or Harvard Summer School.
Harvard students may not cross-register for the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).
Graduating students cross-registering for classes during the spring term should be aware that MIT's term finishes later than Harvard's. This means grades for MIT classes may not be available before degree decisions are made at Harvard. Cross-registering for an MIT class in your graduating term is not recommended if your graduation depends on the class.
Information on MIT’s dates and deadlines is available on the Academic Calendar.
Class descriptions, meeting times, and locations can be found on the Subject Listing and Schedule. The schedule for the fall term is published during the last week of April; the spring schedule is published during the last week of November.
The final exam schedule is issued at the end of the third week of the term.
To cross-register for a course in MIT’s Sloan School of Management, go to the Sloan Bidding website and follow the instructions found under “Cross Registration Links” in the left column.
There are special instructions for cross-registering into 15.501/15.516 Corporate Financial Accounting.
You must meet the earlier of MIT’s or your Harvard school’s cross-registration and add/drop deadlines. See the MIT Academic Calendar.
Obtain the cross-registration petition form from your Harvard Registrar.
Bring 2 copies of the completed form with the appropriate signatures to the MIT Student Services Center, Room 11-120, 77 Massachusetts Avenue. The form will be signed there on behalf of the MIT Registrar’s Office.
You are not required to cross-register or be at MIT on MIT’s Registration Day. You may submit your petition before or after Registration Day, as long as you can obtain the MIT instructor’s signature and meet deadlines.
The Student Services Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Wednesday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Forms should be delivered in person. Please do not put your form in the mail or give it to a classmate to deliver.
You will be asked to complete a biographic form at the Student Services Center. This form is required as it provides the MIT Registrar’s Office with the information necessary to create your student record and register you for the MIT subject.
You may fill out the biographic form online, print it, and bring it to the Student Services Center with your Harvard cross-registration petition.
The Student Services Center will retain the MIT copy of the cross-registration petition. For students from the Kennedy School of Government, the Harvard Business School, and the Harvard School of Public Health, the MIT Registrar’s Office will forward the requisite information to the appropriate Harvard Registrar’s Office. Otherwise, it is your responsibility to return the Harvard Registrar’s copy to the appropriate office.
Obtain an MIT ID Card from the MIT Card Office in the basement of the Stratton Student Center, W20-021. You will need to present a valid picture ID (a passport or US Government issued ID, such as a driver's license) when requesting an MIT Card. Driver's licenses from foreign countries, college/university IDs from other institutions, credit/bank cards, or insurance cards are not accepted.
After submitting your biographic form at the Student Services Center, you must wait until the next business day to obtain your MIT ID Card.
Obtain an MIT email (Athena) account and install MIT web certificates on your browser. These will enable you to access your personal MIT records on WebSIS and participate in MIT’s subject evaluation process.
Follow these steps:
If you wish to drop the MIT subject for which you have cross-registered, file the drop form at your home school.
If your home school automatically notifies MIT of the drop, then no additional paperwork is needed by the MIT Registrar’s Office.
Harvard graduate students may not choose to take MIT subjects on a pass/fail basis.
Harvard undergraduates must obtain the permission of the Harvard Registrar’s Office to take MIT subjects on a pass/fail basis.
When reporting grades, plus and minus modifiers are used at MIT for internal purposes only. They do not appear on MIT transcripts and are not used in the calculation of students’ grade point averages. As they form no part of the MIT grading system for external purposes, plus and minus modifiers are not reported to the Harvard Registrar’s Office.
If you have any questions about cross-registration at MIT, please contact the MIT Registrar’s Office.
