Full-time MIT students (including full-time special students) may cross-register at Wellesley during the fall and spring terms. Students must abide by the rules of both MIT and Wellesley. No more than half of a student's registration may be taken at Wellesley for any one term.
Undergraduate students who are not registered for a full subject load at MIT (36 or more units) can cross-register for a Wellesley subject. However, you will be charged the per unit rate of tuition appropriate for light load status for the Wellesley subject. This charge will be added to the charge for the units you are taking at MIT up to a maximum of full MIT tuition for the term.
The Wellesley course catalog and academic calendar are available online.
There is no pre-registration for Wellesley subjects.
Use an MIT add/drop/change form to cross-register for Wellesley subjects. See conversion of Wellesley credits to MIT units.
Write the Wellesley subject number on the add/drop/change form and bring a copy to the Wellesley Registrar’s Office to complete the cross-registration process.
Sophomores may designate a Wellesley subject as an Exploratory subject. Juniors and Seniors may designate a Wellesley subject as one of their two electives to be graded P/D/F.
The cross-registration deadline is MIT’s Add Date (end of the fifth week of the term).
Typically, subjects taken at Wellesley count in a student’s record as unrestricted electives.
Students may petition the Committee on Curricula (CoC) if they wish to substitute a Wellesley subject for a HASS subject or other GIR. Information about petitioning is available on the CoC website.
If you wish to substitute a Wellesley subject for either a major or minor requirement you should contact your department for approval.
Graduate students who cross-register for a Wellesley class will not receive graduate level (‘H’ or ‘G’) credit for the subject. If you believe the subject justifies graduate level credit, you can seek the approval of your department to change the subject level credit. If your department approves the request, they will ask the Registrar’s Office to make the change on your MIT record.
To drop a Wellesley subject, complete an MIT add/drop/change form by MIT’s Drop Date. The form may be handed in at either the MIT Student Services Center, 11-120 or Registrar’s Office, 5-119. The MIT Registrar’s Office will notify the Wellesley Registrar’s Office that the subject is being dropped.
All Wellesley subjects appear on your MIT transcript with a ‘W’ prefix for Wellesley followed by two letters denoting the subject area at Wellesley (for example, WRE would indicate a religion class at Wellesley).
Wellesley’s grading scale is comparable to MIT’s and the grades earned at Wellesley will be reported on your MIT transcript. Please note that, as with MIT subjects, any plus or minus modifiers awarded by a Wellesley instructor will be reported on your internal grade report only. Plus and minus modifiers do not appear on your MIT transcript.
Questions about the cross-registration procedure should be addressed to the MIT Registrar’s Office.
