NEW: The transition from two degrees to double majors

The Committee on Curricula has the authority to act "with power" for the Faculty in the following areas of undergraduate education:

  • Proposals to create and revise subjects, as well as to remove them from the curriculum;
  • Proposals to create new curricula (majors and minors), revise existing curricula, and discontinue curricula, provided that such proposals involve no substantial changes in policies regarding undergraduate education;
  • Proposals for subjects that may be used to satisfy the Restricted Electives in Science and Technology Requirement (REST) and the Laboratory Requirement within the General Institute Requirements (GIRs).

The Committee also reviews proposals for departmental exchange programs, petitions from students to make substitutions for the GIRs (HASS, REST, Institute Lab), and petitions from students seeking to earn two bachelor's degrees or a double major. The Committee serves as the standing Faculty advisory body to the Registrar. The formal description of the Committee's responsibilities is defined in Section 1.73.3 of the Faculty Rules and Regulations.

The Committee's membership includes six elected Faculty members and four undergraduate students. Also serving in a non-voting capacity are the Dean for Undergraduate Education, a designee of the Dean for Undergraduate Education, the Registrar, and the Chair of the Committee on the Undergraduate Program. The Committee receives staff support from the Catalog and Publications unit of the Registrar's Office, 5-111, 617-258-6412 (e-mail: curricula at mit dot edu).
