Substitutions within the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) Requirement

Petition Form

Description

To receive credit toward the HASS Requirement for a subject not designated HASS, students must petition the HASS Education Office, 14N-410, and the Committee on Curricula (CoC), 5-111. Students are encouraged to check with the HASS Education Office to ensure that the proposed class will be an acceptable substitute.

The following are examples of the types of subjects for which a student may seek HASS credit:

See the Bulletin for a complete description of the HASS requirement.

Guidelines

The content of the proposed course must be in the Humanities, Arts, or Social Sciences. The following guidelines govern the approval of HASS petitions:

Procedure

Deadline: None. However, students are encouraged to submit petitions as soon as possible after they have received a grade for the subject (or subjects) in question. Seniors in their final term should complete a petition form as soon as possible after finalizing their registration for the proposed substitution.

  1. Complete the Petition for Substitutions within the HASS Requirement.
  2. Print and sign the form; then have it signed by your advisor. If the proposed substitution is a graduate subject, the instructor must also sign the petition.
  3. Deliver the completed petition to the HASS Education Office, 14N-410. Upon approval by the SHASS Dean, the HASS Education Office will forward the petition to the CoC; the CoC will then notify you of the final decision by e-mail.
