To pursue a second Bachelor's degree, students must petition the Committee on Curricula, 5-111. However, please note that this program is being phased out, beginning in the 2008-09 academic year. As such, this program is available only to students who began their studies during the 2007-08 academic year or earlier. See also "Program for Two Bachelor's Degrees" in the Bulletin and general information about the transition.
To receive two SB degrees, you must complete two CI-H subjects and CI-M subjects that fulfill the communication component for each major. Typically, this means that you will take four CI-M subjects, two for each program. However, if a subject is approved as a CI subject in both majors, you may use that subject to fulfill the CI-M component of both programs simultaneously, with the approval of the Subcommittee on the Communication Requirement (SOCR). See the Communication Requirement Petition form; contact the Office of the Communication Requirement (12-126; 617-253-2313) for more information.
Note: Students should consult Student Financial Services regarding any impact that pursuing a second degree might have on eligibility for MIT or federal financial aid.
Students are expected to plan a two-degree program in advance, even if both degrees are not received simultaneously. Both programs should be completed in a four- or five- year period, and students are expected to maintain continuous enrollment at MIT while pursuing the second degree. To be eligible, a student must:
If a student seeks a second SB as part of the Master's of Engineering (MEng) program in Course 6, the student must petition before entering the graduate phase of the program, even if the student expects to receive both SBs at the same time as the MEng.
For second SB petitions in which Course 2A is one of the degrees to be pursued, the following requirements apply: i) the student must first have an approved 2A concentration proposal on file with the ME Undergraduate Office; ii) no subject in the student-designed part of the 2A program may be a required subject or restricted elective in the other degree program; and iii) the second SB petition must be signed by the ME Undergraduate Officer.
Deadline: The petition must be submitted by the Add Date of the term prior to the term in which the student intends to receive the first of the two degrees. Petitions submitted after this deadline will be considered only under exceptional circumstances.
If a student plans to pursue a different degree program within the original department(s), the student must file a change of major form with the Registrar’s Office. If a student plans to pursue a program that is offered outside one or both of the original departments, the student must file a new petition with the CoC by the required deadline. The CoC will review the new petition in accordance with the guidelines noted above.
