Transcript Requests
GPA calculation, conversion to a 4.0 scale
conversion of MIT credit units to semester hours
Transcripts may be ordered in person, by mail, or by fax. We cannot accept orders over the telephone, by electronic mail, or from a third party.
Fee: the fee is $4.00 per transcript. This fee includes U.S. Postal Service first class mailing to anywhere in the world. We do not charge for the completion of any forms that might accompany your order.
Timing: from the time we receive your request, please allow three business days for the processing of your order, prior to its being mailed. Be sure to plan ahead and make your request early enough to meet your deadlines.
Express Service Option: we do not accept rush requests but we can send your transcript(s) via DHL express service at an additional cost to you. This service is next business day to most U.S. destinations, while deliveries to international locations may take several days. Be advised that DHL will not deliver to a post office box.
We do not send transcripts out via fax.
Each transcript is issued to a specific recipient (a person, school, company, organization). For students who attended MIT in 1994 or later the name of the recipient prints on the transcript. You may request one of the following for each transcript you order:
If you are providing a transcript to a third party carefully read their instructions regarding submission of your transcript. Be advised that in some cases a transcript issued to you, the student, will be rejected.
All transcripts are packaged in separate sealed envelopes. If more than one transcript is being sent to the same address the transcripts will be in separate sealed envelopes and mailed together in a single larger envelope.
How to Order
CURRENT students may order official or unofficial transcripts from the Student Services Center (SSC). The transcript request form (pdf) for official transcripts can be downloaded and printed from WebSIS. This form is also available at the SSC in room 11-120.
In Person: bring a valid picture ID to the Student Services Center and submit a transcript request form.
By Fax or Mail: send a signed and dated transcript request form. Be sure to sign the form. Unsigned requests will not be processed. If you cannot download the form you may send a signed and dated letter which includes the following:
- your complete name
- your MIT ID number
- your date of birth
- number of transcripts you want
- names and complete addresses to which you want the transcript(s) sent
- if you want the transcript(s) mailed, sent via DHL express service, or held for you to pick up
- a daytime phone number or email address where you can be reached
- your signature
Please explain any special requests or deadlines.
If you are ordering a transcript at or near the end of term and want that term's grades to appear on the transcript you must request in your letter to have your order held until grades have been posted. If you are receiving a degree at the end of term you may request your order be held until the degree is awarded. Be aware that cross-registration grades may be posted later than MIT grades since other schools operate on different calendars.
Payment can be made with:
- a charge to your student account
- a personal check made payable to MIT
- Visa, Discover, or MasterCard
We do not accept American Express or cash.
To pay by credit card, you will need to use MIT's online payment service. This service is secure and encrypted. Please include a copy of your receipt from your online payment with your order form. This payment service is not an online ordering service. You must submit a signed request in order to release your transcript.
If paying by credit card, do not put your credit card number on your signed request form or letter.
Faxed requests must state if you are paying by credit card or want your student account charged.
