Registration Load for Undergraduate Students

  • units for Listener and ROTC subjects are not included in the calculation of registration load
  • an undergraduate on approved Study Abroad or Domestic Study Away is considered full-time
  • an undergraduate on a term of Co-op is considered full-time

Fall and Spring

Calculation of registration load for Fall or Spring Term:

Full-time
36 or more units
Three-quarters time
27-35 units
Half-time
18-26 units
Less than half-time
under 18 units

Note: when calculating tuition, full tuition is charged when you register for 32 units or more in a term, including units for Listener and ROTC subjects. This differs from registration load for which full-time is 36 units or more, not including units for Listener and ROTC subjects.

IAP

Registration load is not tracked or reported for the January Term (IAP). When MIT provides student enrollment information, IAP is included in the dates for fall term and the fall term registration load is applied to IAP, whether or not the student registers for IAP.

For example: if you are registered for a full-time load in Fall Term 2005-06 you are considered full-time from 07-Sep-2005 to 03-Feb-2006 (from the first day of fall term classes to the last day of IAP), whether or not you register for IAP.

Summer

Undergraduates registered in the spring term who do not graduate or withdraw retain student status throughout the summer, whether or not they register for summer session.
