HOW TO GET APPROVAL
In order to get approval to take an Advanced Standing Examination (except for entering first year and transfer students who may take Advanced Standing Examinations during Orientation) you must:
1. Determine that you have never been registered for or never attended class at MIT in the subject concerned. Special students are not eligible to take Advanced Standing Examinations.
2. Print, complete and sign an Advanced Standing Examination petition form (pdf) . Then, obtain the following additional signatures:
a. Instructor in charge of the subject or the appropriate Department Administrator. The instructor in charge may require evidence of competence in addition to the examination if the subject normally involves measures of student performance qualitatively different from the examination.
b. Advisor's signature if you are an Undergraduate student or your Registration Officer if you are a graduate student.
3. Return the completed petition to the MIT Schedules Office in Room 5-111 , at least three weeks before the examination period. Deadlines can be found in the MIT Academic Calendar.
WHAT TO EXPECT
You can expect to hear about the status of your petition via e-mail shortly after submission of your completed. This e-mail will include whether or not you were approved and scheduling information about taking the Advanced Standing Examination. Once you receive approval, it is your responsibility to contact the departmental headquarters of the subject involved if you decide that you will not be taking the exam. Failure to cancel by notifying the appropriate people may hinder your ability to get approval to take the exam at a subsequent time.

2.30 Advanced Standing Examinations
Rules and Regulations of the Faculty
Revised to 5/98
| 2.31 |
An examination for advanced standing may be taken by an undergraduate student during the scheduled examination periods, provided that the student has never been registered for or attended class in the subject concerned. A request to take such an exam must be filed with the Registrar at least three weeks before the first day of the examination period. An advanced standing examination shall be given only upon the approval of the Faculty member in charge of the subject, who may require evidence of competence in addition to the examination if the subject normally involves measures of student performance qualitatively different from the examination. A passing grade entitles a student to full credit for the subject. A failing grade will appear on the permanent record except for first-year undergraduate students for whom a failing grade will appear only on the internal record. |
GRADING OF ADVANCED STANDING EXAMINATION
Last Revised on June 29, 2006First-year Students
- If you are a first-year student and receive a C or better on an Advanced Standing Exam taken in August/September or December, you will receive the grade P. The P grade will be posted to your fall term record and will appear on your transcript.
- If you are a first-year student and receive a C or better on an Advanced Standing Exam taken in January/February or May, you will receive an A-C grade. The A-C grade will be posted to your spring term record and will appear on your transcript. It will not be included in the calculation of your term or cumulative GPA.
- If you are a first-year student no record will be kept of D or F performance if the exam is taken in August/September. Non-passing D or F grades on an exam taken later in the first year will appear on your internal record but not on your transcript.
- If you pass an Advanced Standing Exam but decide to take the subject in a subsequent term both the subject and the Advanced Standing Exam, along with their grades, will show on your transcript. The grade received for the subject will be used in the calculation of your term and cumulative GPA. The grade received for the Advanced Standing Exam will not be used in the calculation.
- If you are a first-year student and take the exam in December or May the credit earned will count toward the freshman 54- or 57- credit limit for the term.
Students Other than First-year
- If you are not a first-year student a grade ranging from A through F will be recorded and will appear on your transcript. The grade will not be included in the calculation of your term or cumulative GPA.
- If you decide to take the subject in a subsequent term both the subject and the Advanced Standing Exam, along with their grades, will show on your transcript. The grade received for the subject will be used in the calculation of your term and cumulative GPA. The grade received for the Advanced Standing Exam will not be used in the calculation.
