Residential computing: Dorms and Residence halls

Undergraduates and graduate students at MIT living in dormitories have access to MITnet through a wired and wireless network connection in their dorm room. Each dorm room is equipped with at least one ethernet data port per resident. Each dorm also has complete wireless coverage. Connecting to the network and internet is as easy as opening your computer, selecting the MIT wireless network or plugging in an ethernet cable and following a quick registration process.

The steps to getting your MITnet connection setup are:

1.)
Obtain a computer.

MIT Information Services and Technology recommends Intel-based PC systems and Apple Macintosh computers and supports them with free anti-virus software, cables and connection assistance. The systems on the published recommended list have been tested by IS&T for compatibility with MITnet and with applications commonly used on campus (this list is updated regularly). Linux workstations can also be connected to MITnet, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Athena workstations are supported.
2.)
Obtain a network adapter.

We maintain a list of recommended network adapters for both PC's and Mac's. A "recommended" adapter is one that we have tested. An adapter which is not on our "recommended" list may not be fully compatible with MITnet and our software.

In most cases all desktop computers come with ethernet cards built in and all laptops generally come with both wired and wireless cards built in. Please check with the manufacturer's system specifications for your computer.
3.)
Obtain a network cable or connect to the "MIT" wireless network and register your computer for DHCP.

Network cables can be obtained from the Athena Consulting Office in building N42. The MIT wireless network is available in all dorms. It is a completely open network with SSID "MIT". Please visit out wireless page for additional information including notes on wireless security.

To register your machine, follow the instructions at http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/network/dhcp/students.html.
4.)
Optional: Obtain and install software

MIT recommended software is available at http://web.mit.edu/ist/topics/software. If you have trouble installing or obtaining this software, please use the help request form to inform your RCC that you were unable to successfully install the software. An RCC will contact you as soon as possible.

If you have further questions, please contact an RCC by using the help request form.
