As of fall 2005, all of the MIT residence halls have complete 802.11b/g wireless coverage in addition to the wired ethernet network. There are now two ways to connect your computer to the network and internet at MIT. While the traditional wired network is useful for some desktop computers and server setups, Residential Computing at MIT asks that dorm residents with laptops try connecting to the wireless network for everyday computer use.
If the wireless network does not meet your needs and you would like to use the wired network connection, ethernet cables are available free of charge from IS&T. You can pick one up in building N42 between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Please check in with the receptionist upon arrival; they will direct you to the correct person. You can also pick up ethernet cables from your dorm's Residential Computing Consultant (RCC).
When you request an ethernet cable, the consultant on duty or your RCC will ask you to fill out a survey regarding the wireless network. The survey can be found here.
