Designing the New Residence System
January 20-22
During community discussions, we also plan to investigate these topics: planning
within a changing landscape, developing a mission, constraints and modeling, measuring
outcomes, and ensuring feedback on results.

IAP introduces us
to residence systems and their operations to prepare us to reinvent MIT's. We'll
learn about residence system goals, how they work, a little history, successes and
opportunities, and build a common language for a lively discussion about the residence
system we would like to create at the Institute.
During the course of the week, we will investigate such system design topics as how
cultural change takes place in institutions, system analysis and design, design of
higher education institutions, organization studies, ways of identifying and articulating
shared mission, skills and practices for working as teams, action planning and potential
cost implications, and methods for evaluating the outcomes of the residence system
we put in place.
Day 1: The Present Residence System
This foundational day of presentations and discussion orients us, answering "where
are we now and how did we get here?" The present residence system was designed
and has evolved to address a set of educational goals. We will examine these goals
and place them in the context of the theory of residence system design and the history
of MIT's residence system.
