College a cappella singing has grown immensely since 1980, quadrupling from roughly 300 groups primarily in New England, to over 1,200 groups around the US, with a few in other countries. This growth can be partly traced back from a shift away from a sound more fitting of jazz or classical ensembles and glee clubs to a contemporary a cappella style, with groups singing current pop music, complete with complex textures and a driving beat (with vocal percussion).

Today, collegiate a cappella spans multiple genres and styles, from alternative rock such as the University of Pennsylvania's Off the Beat, to groups specializing in comedy such as the Stanford University Fleet Street Singers, to Jewish groups such as Tufts University's Shir Appeal, jazz-influenced pop groups such as the Amherst College Zumbyes, and fusion groups such as Raagapella and Penn Masala, who sing a fusion of Western and South Asian music.

Since its inception in 1996, the ICCA (International Competition of Collegiate A Cappella) has been dedicated to providing top notch college a cappella groups with the opportunity to showcase their talent for an international audience and to take home valuable feedback from their highly qualified adjudicators.

Each year, our tournament's competitions take place from October through March in six regions: New England, Northeast, MidAtlantic, South, Midwest and West. Each region holds three or more quarterfinals that showcase six to eight groups. The top two groups in each quarterfinal advance to the semifinals, where the winning group is named champion of that region and advances to the the International Finals, held in Alice Tully Hall in New York City's Lincoln Center.

This year, Resonance has the privilege of hosting the semifinals for the New England ICCAs, where eight of the most talented groups in the New England area will be competing to see who has the tightest harmonies and the most memorable performance. The performers will be judged on vocal abilities as well as choreography and technique. While the winning group will go on to compete at the 2008 International Championship Finals at the Lincoln Center, New York, recognition will also be given to the best soloist, percussionist, and song arrangements of the night. Don't miss this opportunity to see collegiate a cappella at its best!
