---------------------------- CURRENT RULES ------------------------------- There are over 1000 people on the various reuse lists, and some of the lists get 10-20 messages a day. It is important that you read the rules of use before emailing any reuse list. You are always welcome to ask questions at reuse-owner@mit.edu. Please note that reuse-request is now auto-handled by the Mailman server. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- Contents: ----------------- 1. General rules 2. A description of the lists 3. Reuse rules 4. Reuse-sell rules 5. Reuse-ask rules 6. Reuse-housing rules 7. Subscribe/Unsubscribe instructions ----------------- 1. General rules ----------------- * The reuse lists are unmoderated email lists. You may email a list without being on it. You may receive bounce messages for invalid email addresses on the lists. Don't re-email your message unless you're sure you mispelled the list name. * No attachments--put pictures on a website or send them to individuals when requested. The large files cause some people problems. * Keep all posts relevant to the particular list. Discussion and flaming must be moved to reuse-discuss. The reuse administrators will personally email people who misuse the lists. * The reuse lists are for the benefit of the MIT community including students, staff, and alumni. You are encouraged to tell your MIT friends and MIT coworkers about reuse, but please tell them to email reuse-owner with all questions, not the list itself. * For all of these lists, items must be legally transferrable and located in or delivered to the greater Boston area. Please note that breaking reuse rules may result in you being removed from the reuse lists for a period of time. So save this file and refer to it when you're not sure! ----------------- 2. The lists ----------------- * reuse to post availability of FREE items. This list is restricted MIT-affiliated students, staff, faculty, alumni, etc. * reuse-ask to ask for items * reuse-sell to sell, barter, or trade items * reuse-housing to post availability of apartments or houses for sale/rent in the Boston or surrounding area, or for people looking for housing or roommates. * reuse-discuss to discuss these mailing lists and related philosophy. If you have a serious problem though, mail reuse-owner. ** reuse-owner for help in using these lists or to modify your subscription status, suggestions, and questions. Archives of most of the lists are available through Discuss, and on the Web through the Discuss --> WWW gateway. When emailing a list, please be aware that your email address and contact information may be world-readable. ----------------- 3. Reuse rules ----------------- Reuse is only for giving away free items. --> Offering items for reuse Please include the following information about items: * What it is * Who to talk to (or not to talk to) about picking it up (name, email, phone, etc.) * Where it can be picked up * Approximate size/weight (will it require two people to carry, etc.) You may offer items as "first come, first served" or choose who will receive an item. If you expect money or other goods for your item, it must be posted to reuse-sell. If you will choose the person who gets the item, then email reuse when the item has been claimed or when you have enough claimants (if someone changes their mind after they see it, you can email reuse again). Items with MIT Property Tags that do not have deactivation stickers should not be posted to reuse or removed from campus until they do. To deactivate an item, please contact Ken McLaughlin (kenmc@mit.edu, 617-258-8475). If you leave items outside of your office or dorm room, you are responsible for keeping them orderly and cleaning up whatever does not get taken within a couple of days (it's best to leave a note saying the pile is for reuse and the date it'll be disposed of). Under no circumstances may monitors be left for MIT to clean up. If the monitor belongs to MIT, you must arrange with the Properties office to have it recycled. If it doesn't belong to MIT, it must be disposed of through your house manager or put out with your personal recycling at home. Many cities, especially Cambridge, will recycle monitors for free (generally one per week), but MIT must pay to recycle them. --> Picking up items from reuse If an item is available as "first come, first served, don't contact me" and you pick it up, then promptly mail the list to let people know it's gone. You can send email saying you're about to go get an item (to save others the trip), but you cannot reserve an item this way. A reuse posting cannot be considered permission to enter a space that is usually unaccessible to you. If the offerer will not escort you, consider the item off-limits. If you see an item with a deactivation sticker on it, this doesn't imply that the item is up for reuse! Please don't take (or post) anything unless you are certain that its owner is trying to get rid of it. This service is not linked with the MIT Campus Police or the Properties office. If you are not MIT affiliated, you may be trespassing on MIT's campus, and the Campus Police will not look kindly upon you removing property from MIT. *** Because of the increase in thefts at MIT, it is highly recommended *** *** that when picking up an item, you keep a copy of the reuse message *** *** in case you run into the Campus Police. *** ------------------- 4. Reuse-sell rules ------------------- Reuse-sell is for selling, bartering, or trading items. It is not for asking for items except as payment in a barter or trade. Like other for-sale lists, send email with what you have, how much you want for it and your contact info. When the item is gone, you have the option of sending a follow-up message. ------------------ 5. Reuse-ask rules ------------------ Reuse-ask is for asking for items. Describe what you're looking for and what you're willing to pay, trade or barter for it (optional). Summaries of this list are sent out every 10 days to reuse and reuse-sell. If something is extremely important and needs to go out sooner, please ask the reuse admins to send out a summary earlier. Do not email reuse/reuse-sell with your ask-for message. Send email if you receive what you ask for after the initial posting so that it doesn't end up in the summary. ---------------------- 6. Reuse-housing rules ---------------------- Reuse-housing is for advertising housing availability or needs in the greater Boston area. Like other housing lists, post what you have or what you're looking for. Re-posts may happen at most once a week (although once every two weeks is sufficient). Those who are MIT affiliated may be able to access housing listings through MIT's housing and residence office. For more information see: http://housing.mit.edu/off_campus/off_campus_housing ------------------------ 7. Subscribe/Unsubscribe ------------------------ There are three ways to add or remove yourself from a reuse list: 1. If you're on athena, and you know your mailman list password, you can run % mmblanche -d $USER listname 2. You can email listname-request (reuse-request for reuse, reuse-ask-request for reuse-ask, etc.) with "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" in the message and follow the instructions for confirmation. 3. You can use the web interfaces: Reuse: http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/reuse Reuse-ask: http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/reuse-ask Reuse-sell: http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/reuse-sell Reuse-housing: http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/reuse-housing Reuse-discuss: http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/reuse-discuss
