Research Overview

Currently, I am studying the fluid mechanics of settling porous particles at pycnoclines with regard to the sinking behaviour, i.e. residence times, of marine particles such as marine snow in the ocean. The sinking velocity of these highly porous, (sub-) millimeter-scale particles in a salinity stratification is mainly determined by both the wake fluid attached to as well as interstitial fluid carried by the particle. Both act together in decelerating particles leading to cumulative layers. However, marine particles are the main vector of carbon export from the upper ocean. If the retention of particles at pycnoclines was large, most of the organic matter can be anticipated to be recycled by heterotrophic bacteria and, thereby, to remain in the upper ocean. This is a critical issue for modeling transport processes in the ocean. The problem is addressed by means of density and velocity measurements on individual particles considering the different mixing and fluid transfer time scales involved.
