Athena Introduction Assignment (Monday)

Monday afternoon, June 26
  • If you didn't already, run the setupzrsi command.
  • First, grab the files that you'll need to write your minipaper. To do this, please copy all the files in /mit/rsi/template/MiniPaper into your MiniPaper directory (it already exists).
  • Next, please copy over some files that we'll use during the remaining computer assignments. Please copy all the files in /mit/rsi/misc/examples to your own examples directory (which also exists -- and remember, directory names are case sensitive).
  • E-mail your tutor with a brief (1-paragraph) discription of yourself and your intersts. Your tutor's e-mail address is located below:
       Ms. Jacinta Conrad jacinta
       Mr. Kai-Yuh Hsiao khsiao
       Mr. Dan Kaganovich dkaganov
       Dr. John Rickert jrickert
       Ms. Jenny Sendova jsendova

  • Open Netscape and change your default homepage to the RSI homepage (http://web.mit.edu/rsi/www/). To change this:
    • Go to the RSI homepage (http://web.mit.edu/rsi/www/). You can do this either by deleting the text in the "Location" box or by choosing "File" and then "Open Page" from the menu bar and then typing in the location in the box that follows.
    • Choose "Edit" and then "Preferences..." from the menu bar.
    • In the box on the left of the new window that appears, click "Navigator"
    • Under the "Home Page" section on the right of the window, click "Use Current Page."
    • Click "Ok" to exit Preferences.
  • Go to the RSI website (now accessible by clicking the "home" button) and find out who your mentor is (the mentorship list is located within "People").
  • Try to Research your mentor on the web. Helpful places to start your research are located in the Frequently Asked Questions area of the RSI website. To get there, choose "Help Me!" and then "Frequently Asked Questions."
  • Play around with the commands we talked about. Try the emacs tutorial as time permits.
