Peter, Any chance you might be able to run the following item in an upcoming CACM? I've already gotten a couple of inquiries about it, so I think there is enough interest to make it worthwhile. Jerry Correction to the Project Athena Statement of Ethics, reported by Jerome H. Saltzer, CACM 32,6 (June 1989) p. 704. Despite electronic transmission and all the other wonders of modern technology, the Athena Statement of Ethics that CACM published in the June 1989 issue special section on the Internet worm ended up with two missing sentences and phrases, one of which might not be noticed, but the second of which can leave a reader rather confused as to what was meant. In the interests of readers who might like to know what the original said, here are the missing words: Under "Intended Use," add the following as the third sentence: "The use of Athena resources for immediate financial gain is similarly improper." Under "Privacy and Security", the next-to-last sentence should be two sentences, reading, "A shared program should not secretly collect information about its users. Personal information about individuals, which a user whould not normally disseminate, should not be stored or communicated on the system."
