Requirements for Using SAPweb

If you are currently working in SAP, you are already set up with the required Kerberos userid, SAP userid, and authorizations. If you are already successfully using SAPweb for purchasing, then your computer is also correctly set up for Journal Voucher and Credit Card transactions.

Kerberos userid

To use SAPweb, you need to have a Kerberos userid. This is (usually) the same as your Eudora email account. However, some MIT departments, labs and centers have email systems that do not use the Kerberos protocol. If you work in one of these areas, you may need to get a Kerberos userid to access SAP.

All MIT staff are eligible to receive Kerberos userids. You get a Kerberos userid by contacting Athena User Accounts:

Office: N42 1st Floor
Phone: x3-1325
Email: accounts@mit.edu

SAP userid and authorizations

To begin to use SAPweb, you must have authorization to perform SAP-based financial and/or administrative transactions. To get access to SAP, contact the primary authorizor for your department, usually your Administrative or Fiscal Officer. If you do not know who the primary authorizor is, look it up on the Primary Authorizor page.

Web Certificates

You need a personal web certificate to use SAPweb. The web certificate identifies you to the SAP server when you perform a transaction. To obtain certificates, see the Information Systems web page: Web Certificates at MIT.

If you share a computer with someone, be sure to read Sharing a Computer.

The Right Hardware

You can use SAPweb on any computer (Mac, PC, or Unix) that runs Netscape version 4 or higher.

The Right Software (Browser)

The only software you need to use SAPweb is the Netscape web browser: You must have at least Netscape version 4.x.

If you normally install software on your own computer, you can download and install this version of Netscape from the I/S distribution pages:

Macintosh version
Windows NT version

Set your Netscape preferences to:

  • Enable JavaScript
  • Enable Style Sheets
  • Accept only cookies that get sent back to the originating server

Expand the Advanced Preferences to Cache and select "Every Time."
