The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program

Introduction

MIT School of Engineering and School of Science students interested in a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering are invited to apply to the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program.          

Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence In Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must:

  • have abilities and potential shown to meet significant responsibilities, involvement in mathematics/science/engineering related or student organizations, employment, independent investigation and research
  • provide evidence that demonstrates your individuality
  • plan your primary education in math/science
  • intend to pursue doctoral degree(s)

Selection Criteria

Applicants are chosen on the basis of the criteria set down by the Goldwater Foundation:

  • Demonstrated potential for and commitment to a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering
  • Outstanding academic performance
  • Students of promise who display intellectual intensity in science, mathematics, or engineering
  • Students should have potential for significant future contribution in his/her chosen field

Current MIT students must submit four copies of their complete application as described below to Dean Dick K.P. Yue, School of Engineering, Room 1-206 by November 25. Complete applications consist of the following materials:

 

Provided by you:

  • Information Form with your signature
  • Essay with your signature
  • Transcript(s) from any institutions attended since high school
  • Secondary school transcript, GED documentation, or home school documents (should include test scores, such as ACT, SAT, etc.)
  • Copy of Permanent Resident card (formerly known as the Alien Registration Card) and Letter of Intent to become a US citizen, if applicable
  • Voluntary Survey From (optional) - original copy only

Provided by your referees:

  • Letters of recommendation from at three referees, signed, in a sealed envelope.

Timeline

MIT Process

November 25

Turn in completed application to the School of Engineering.

 

National Process

 

February 1

Receipt deadline for the nomination of candidates for the 2006 Goldwater Scholarship Competition. Institutions may elect to set an earlier internal deadline.

Submit one original and one copy of all required documents for each nomination.

March

The 2006 Goldwater Scholars and Alternates are selected by the Board of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

April

Nominees and their faculty representatives are notified of their final status in the Program competition.
