Costs and Financial Aid

Tuition
Fall and spring term tuition charges are $36,140 for academic year 2008-2009. In addition, students registered for the summer internship component of the program will be charged an intern tuition rate of 35% of the usual summer tuition, or approximately $4,216. Tuition rates for the following year are established each spring. See the MIT Facts page for more information about costs.

Living Costs
Living costs in the Cambridge/Boston area are among the highest in the U.S. Typical monthly expenses for housing, food, medical insurance, books, and personal items range from $1,800 to $2,800 for a single student. This figure is a guideline only, and should be carefully estimated based on individual circumstances and quality of life expectations. Call the MIT Graduate Housing Office for information on the availability and cost of student housing at 617-253-5148 or email them at graduatehousing@mit.edu.

Student Financial Services
If you think you will need loans to help finance your graduate education, you may apply for federally subsidized loans by submitting the FAFSA form (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) any time after January 1. Application forms and details of the application procedure may be obtained from Student Financial Services, Room 11-120, or by calling 617-253-4971. This office is also a good source of information on other types of loans that may be available.

Departmental Financial Aid
For the 2008-09 academic year, financial aid offered to students will take the form of partial tuition fellowships. Past students have been awarded the Hennesy Fellowship, the Ida Green Fellowship, and the Lyons Fellowship through MIT's Graduate Students Office. Please contact the Graduate Program in Science Writing for further information at 617-253-6668.

Other Sources of Financial Aid
In addition to the funds available at MIT, there are other sources of financial aid for graduate students worth exploring. The Office of the Dean for Graduate Education Financial Aid web page is a good place to start your search for outside funding. In addition, the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing offers the Taylor/Blakeslee University Fellowships specifically for graduate students in science writing programs (several students in our program have received this $2,000.00 fellowship). Those applicants interested in environmental issues may wish to investigate the Switzer Foundation Fellowship.
