Science Writing Students Visit Nuclear Reactor Lab
A few of our intrepid students went on a tour of MIT's Nuclear Reactor Lab, learning quite a bit about safety in nuclear facilities and MIT's "trashcan reactor" in the process.
Here they are in the airlock, which uses pressurized air to prevent any possible contaminated air from escaping.
Here the students peer into the room where research has been performed using a neutron beam to treat glioblastoma multiforme.
The Reactor Basement Frisking Station? It's one of the (many) places where they check you for radioactive contamination. None was found.
The control room of the reactor lab, with our guide, Greg.
Inside the Reactor Lab.
Getting "frisked" for contamination before we leave. We had to go through two of these checks before we were allowed into the outside world. Again, none was found.
